Smoking and Celebs

Smoking and movies stars have gone hand in hand for generations. Some of our most beloved stars are smokers and have been for years. Now some of those celeb smokers have become smoke free using hypnosis.

People choose to quit for any number of reasons, but to be successful one really needs to be ready to make it happen for a lifetime. That moment for Ben Affleck came after the birth of his first child.

Like Ben Affleck, or Ellen DeGeneres (Click here for Ellen's story), you may want to become smoke free for your health, and so you are still around to see your family grow.

Ben Affleck tells Oprah: "I finally decided to quit smoking when I found out I was going to have a child. That was the thing that sort of put it over the top for me. I decided to go to a hypnotist. You sit in a chair and the hypnotist sips water and just talks to you for an hour, and explains how nicotine is poison."

"All of a sudden, I thought, 'This is asinine that I've been doing this to myself for all these years.' My last cigarette was on November 10th, 2005, and I feel a huge difference in my health now that I don't smoke. I feel like I'm in better shape than I was five years ago."

Your Health and Smoking

Health effects on individual smokers

Unless they quit, up to half of all smokers will die from their smoking, most of them before their 70th birthday and only after years of suffering a reduced quality of life.

Furthermore, the average smoker will die about eight years earlier than a similar non-smoker. Life expectancy improves greatly after a smoker quits.

There is also strong scientific evidence that smoking is related to more than two dozen diseases and conditions. Fortunately, most of these start to reverse after a smoker quits smoking. In fact, the benefits of quitting may begin in a matter of hours.

Smokers are at extra risk for:

  • Coronary heart disease (for example, heart attacks)
  • Peripheral vascular disease (circulatory problems)
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol (LDL)
  • Cancer of the lungs, mouth, throat and voice box
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Pneumonia
  • The common cold
  • Tooth decay (cavities)
  • Gum disease
  • Sleep problems
